Sunday Jan 15, 2023
Sunday Jan 15, 2023
Artist Jill Hoy is at a place of artistic integration. She would be the first to say that she benefited greatly from the creative critique she once received from her husband and fellow artist, Jon Imber. When Jon died in 2014 from ALS, Jill grieved not only the loss of her husband but also of her creative partner. That emotional process, occurring over the past few years during which Jill has focused on her art in a new way, has been accentuated by an internal wellspring of knowledge and confidence. Learn more about the impact of this life phase on Jill’s art, as well as Jill’s love for her adopted home of Deer Isle, Maine, today on Radio Maine.

In 1989, Betsy Evans Hunt had an unexpected encounter with internationally acclaimed photographer Todd Webb that would prove life-changing. Her educational and professional background prepared Betsy well for the day that Todd and his wife, Lucille, walked into the Evans Gallery in Portland, Maine. Betsy’s graduate thesis about famed photographers Alfred Stieiglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe, and work for Robert Mapplethorpe in New York City, enabled her to speak intelligently and passionately about the fine art photography world. Todd, a 1920’s era stockbroker-turned-photographer trained by Ansel Adams, had once worked with Georgia O’Keeffe. The Webbs, by then in their eighties and living in central Maine, formed a bond with Betsy that would continue until Todd’s death at age 94 in 2000. Betsy continues to support his legacy through the Todd Webb Archives, museum placements and publications. Join our conversation with Betsy Evans Hunt today on Radio Maine.

Author Ed Power first became intrigued by the human interaction with nature, and the risks inherent in this intersection, growing up as a surfer and sailboat racer on the mid-Atlantic coast. A former longtime editor and publisher, Ed had previously worked as a journalist for Virginia’s largest newspaper, The Virginia Pilot, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. When Ed eventually retired, he and wife, Marguerite, moved to Utah to become, in his words, “ski bums.” The sounds of morning avalanche control explosions soon piqued his journalistic curiosity. Ed describes this dangerous and fascinating profession in Dragons in the Snow: Avalanche Detectives and the Race to Beat Death in the Mountains, which won the 2020 National Outdoor Board Award for Outdoor Literature. We are fortunate that Ed and Marguerite have become part of our Portland Art Gallery community. Join our conversation with Ed Power today on Radio Maine.

Growing up in a small town in Northern Maine, Admiral Gregory Johnson, USN, Retired, could not have foretold that he would spend more than three decades traveling the world with the United States military. With a BA in political science from the University of Maine in Orono, and an acceptance letter to attend law school in his home state, it seemed his dream of becoming an attorney was within reach. Then Greg got word that he would soon be drafted to serve in Vietnam. He rescinded his law school acceptance and joined the Navy, where he would go on to become a pilot, with the call sign of “Grog.” Continuing on this path, Grog Johnson eventually became the commander of the United States Naval Forces Europe and Allied Forces Southern Europe, working with several well known diplomats, including the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs Colin Powell, and former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen (himself a son of Maine). Along the way, Grog shared his love of literature and Maine art with embassies across the globe. Learn more about Greg “Grog” Johnson on today’s episode of Radio Maine.
